Privacy Policy
TaxTracker (“we”, “our”, or “the App”) is a tax deduction tracker for freelancers and gig workers. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use our mobile application. Please read it carefully. By using the App, you agree to this policy.
1. Information We Collect
We collect and process the following information:
- Account and authentication: If you create an account or sign in (email/password or Google Sign-In), we receive and store your email address, display name, and an authentication token. Passwords are not stored by the App; sign-in is handled by Firebase Authentication and/or our backend.
- Profile and settings: Name, email, work type, income range, tax filing status (e.g. quarterly estimated), business structure, and similar preferences you enter in the App.
- Receipts and expenses: Receipt images you capture or upload, and data you enter or we extract (e.g. merchant name, amount, date, category, payment method, notes). Receipt text extraction (OCR) is performed on your device using Google ML Kit; receipt images are not sent to Google for recognition.
- Mileage: Business trip details you record (dates, distance, purpose, start/end locations if provided).
- Tax estimates and overrides: Data you enter for quarterly or annual tax estimates and any overrides you save.
- Device and usage: The App may use device identifiers and usage data in connection with authentication, sync, and advertising (see Third-Party Services). We do not use your tax or financial data for ad targeting.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To provide the App’s features: storing and syncing your receipts, expenses, mileage, profile, and tax-related data.
- To authenticate you and keep your data associated with your account.
- To improve the App and fix errors (e.g. crash reporting if enabled).
- To comply with applicable law and protect our rights and users’ safety.
3. Storage and Sync
- On your device: Data is stored locally using your device’s storage (e.g. SharedPreferences and a local database). Receipt and expense images are stored on your device.
- Cloud sync (optional): If you sign in with an account, the App can sync your profile, receipts, expenses, and mileage to our servers (e.g. japtap.brainfleck.app) so you can access them across devices. When you add or edit receipts or expenses with images, those images may be uploaded to our backend as part of sync. Synced data is processed and stored according to this policy and our backend’s security measures.
- Uninstalling the App may remove local data. We recommend exporting or backing up important records before uninstalling.
4. Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party services, each with its own privacy practices:
- Google Firebase (Authentication): For sign-in (email/password and Google Sign-In). Firebase collects and processes data as described in Google’s Privacy Policy and Firebase documentation.
- Google Sign-In: To let you sign in with your Google account. Google’s use of information is governed by Google Privacy Policy.
- Google ML Kit (Text Recognition): Used on-device only to extract text from receipt images (e.g. merchant, amount, date). Receipt images are not sent to Google for this processing. See ML Kit documentation for details.
- Google Mobile Ads: The App may show advertisements. Google may collect device and usage data for ad serving and measurement, as described in Google Privacy Policy and Google’s ad policies. We do not use your tax, receipt, or expense data for ad targeting.
We do not sell your personal information or tax/financial data to third parties for advertising or marketing.
5. Data Sharing and Disclosure
- We may share data with our service providers (e.g. hosting, auth) only as needed to operate the App and under contractual obligations to protect your data.
- We may disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights or safety, or with your consent.
- We do not sell or rent your personal information.
6. Security
- We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data (e.g. HTTPS, secure authentication, access controls on our backend).
- You are responsible for keeping your device and account credentials secure (e.g. lock screen, not sharing your device).
7. Your Choices and Rights
- You can view, edit, or delete your data within the App, or clear app data in your device settings.
- You can sign out or delete your account to stop sync; we will process account deletion in line with our data retention practices.
- To request access, correction, or deletion of your personal data, or to ask questions about our practices, contact us using the details in Section 11.
- Depending on your location, you may have additional rights (e.g. under GDPR or CCPA). Contact us to exercise them.
8. Data Retention
- Local data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App.
- Synced data on our servers may be retained as long as your account is active and as needed for legal, security, or operational purposes. After account deletion, we will delete or anonymize your data within a reasonable period, except where we must retain it by law.
9. Children’s Privacy
- The App is not directed at children under 13 (or the applicable age in your region). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us so we can delete it.
10. International Transfer
- Your data may be stored or processed in countries other than your own. We take steps to ensure that such transfers comply with applicable law and that your data remains protected.
11. Changes to This Policy
- We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date below will change when we do.
- Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated policy. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
12. Contact Us
- For privacy-related questions, requests, or complaints, contact us via the in-app Help & Support or at the contact details provided in the App listing (e.g. developer email for TaxTracker on the Google Play Store).
- If you are in the European Economic Area, you may have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
